Import Export Code (IEC) is a 10 digit identification number that is issued by the DGFT (Director General of Foreign Trade), Department of Commerce, Government of India. It is also known as Importer Exporter Code. Companies and businesses must obtain this code to start a business that deals with import and export in/ from the Indian Territory.
It is not possible to deal with export or import business without this IEC code. In case of import or export of services or technology, the IEC shall be required only when the service or technology provider is taking benefits under the Foreign Trade Policy or is dealing with specified services or technologies.
Consequent to the introduction of GST, IEC being issued is the same as the PAN of the firm. However, the IEC will still be separately issued by DGFT based on an application. Anyone can take IEC like Individual, Proprietorship, Partnership, Limited Liability Partnership, Private Limited, Public Limited, Society, Trust, Section 8 Company, or any other type of organization.
